beneficial for moderate CKD. Of note, several other studies found advantage of calcium-free binders over calciumcontaining binders in suppressing vascular calcification and all-cause mortality in dialysis patients as well as stage 3-4 non-dialysis CKD patients.8-13 This may be because calciumcontaining binders cause calcium overload, which may contribute to vascular calcification. In fact, Hill et al. reported that calcium carbonate induced positive calcium balance in stage 3-4 CKD patients.14

Clearance of fetuin-A--containing calciprotein particles is mediated by scavenger receptor-A.

RATIONALE Fetuin-A is a liver-derived plasma protein involved in the regulation of calcified matrix metabolism. Biochemical studies showed that fetuin-A is essential for the formation of protein-mineral complexes, called calciprotein particles (CPPs). CPPs must be cleared from circulation to prevent local deposition and pathological calcification. OBJECTIVE We studied CPP clearance in mice an...

Fetuin-A-Containing Calciprotein Particles Reduce Mineral Stress in the Macrophage

The formation of fetuin-A-containing calciprotein particles (CPP) may facilitate the clearance of calcium phosphate nanocrystals from the extracellular fluid. These crystals may otherwise seed extra-osseous mineralization. Fetuin-A is a partially phosphorylated glycoprotein that plays a critical role in stabilizing these particles, inhibiting crystal growth and aggregation. CPP removal is thoug...

Calcification of vascular smooth muscle cells is induced by secondary calciprotein particles and enhanced by tumor necrosis factor-α.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Vascular calcification is prevalent in clinical states characterized by low-grade chronic inflammation, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD). Calciprotein particles (CPP) are calcium phosphate-containing nano-aggregates, which have been found in the blood of CKD patients and appear pro-inflammatory in vitro. The interplay of CPPs and inflammatory cytokines with regard to the...

Phosphorylated fetuin-A-containing calciprotein particles are associated with aortic stiffness and a procalcific milieu in patients with pre-dialysis CKD.

BACKGROUND Vascular stiffening occurs in normal ageing and is accelerated in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Vascular calcification contributes to this stiffening and to the high incidence of vascular morbidity and mortality in this population. A network of inhibitors work in concert to reduce mineralization risk in extra-osseous tissue. Fetuin-A is an important systemic inhibitor of ectopic calc...

Casein phosphopeptides from casein micelles by successive digestion with pepsin and trypsin.

When milk is ingested, casein micelles will be successively digested by pepsin in the stomach and trypsin in the intestine. Therefore, we digested casein micelles successively with pepsin at pH 4.0 and trypsin at pH 7.0, and recovered casein phosphopeptides (CPP) as CPP-calcium phosphate (CP) complexes. The CPP-CP complexes contained 248 mg of calcium/g peptides and 175 mg of inorganic phosphor...
